June 18, 2008
A morning of stimulating discussion, the 15th-annual
First-Year Reading Experience will involve the entire
freshman class--more than 3,000 students. During Freshman
Orientation this summer, students will receive a paperback
copy of the novel Never Let me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. When they return in the fall, freshmen will
gather for a panel discussion about the book, then break up
into smaller groups (about 20 or so) to talk about it
further with faculty and staff discussion leaders. Despite
having come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences,
all freshmen will have something in common: along with being
Gamecocks, they will all have read this book.

University 101 is a course open
to all new first-year students and first semester enrolled
transfer students. This course will help you acquire
necessary academic and life success skills as it assists you
in your transition to college and to the University of South
Carolina. U101 will help you to maximize your potential to
become a successful student and responsible USC community
member. University 101 instructors, peer leaders, and
graduate assistants are dedicated to helping you get off to
the best possible start as an outstanding student at USC.

August 16- 23, 2008
Fall classes will begin on August 21, but Welcome Week starts with
the opening of residence halls on Saturday, August 16,
followed by First Night Carolina, a special spirit event.
Welcome Week is designed to help students learn more about
the people, places and resources of University of South
Carolina. During Welcome Week, students can meet faculty,
staff, and other students and have the chance to participate
in a variety of social, recreational, and informational
activities. One of the most popular events of Welcome Week
is the traditional President’s Convocation, to be held this
year on Sunday, August 17. University officials, including
the deans of each academic college and the student body
president, formally welcome parents and students to the
Carolina community.
Welcome Week details will be provided at Summer Orientation.
