CLEP exams accepted and administered by USC

College Credit Without Class Work! Any degree candidate at USC can earn college credit for knowledge gained outside the classroom. The College Level Examination Program (CLEP) is a system of credit by examination sponsored by the College Board. The examinations are developed by college faculty nationwide and reflect material usually covered during basic or introductory college course work. The tests are fair, but demanding. Through this program, any degree-seeking candidate at USC may attempt a CLEP test on the subjects listed on this flyer. A satisfactory score gives the student credit equivalent to the comparable University course. ALL exams are only offered via computer.

NOTE: CLEP tests will be administered at the University of South Carolina-Columbia to degree-seeking USC students only. Degree candidates must receive written approval from their academic advisor prior to taking CLEP examinations to ensure credit toward a degree (see Registration Form).
  • Credit cannot be earned through CLEP while on academic suspension from the University.
  • CLEP cannot be used to earn credit for previously audited courses or courses that were previously failed.
  • CLEP credit cannot be earned to raise a grade previously earned in a University course.
  • Students may not repeat CLEP examinations for USC credit. When a course is exempted through CLEP, credit without a grade will be entered on the students record.
  • Students having their scores sent to USC will be contacted by the Office of Testing Services with a letter indicating whether or not their CLEP scores met the USC requirements for credit.
  • Testing Services will forward passing scores to the Office of the Registrar to be placed on the students academic record.
  • Students passing the CLEP ENGLISH exams will be asked to contact the Office of Testing Services to set-up a date and time to take the essay portion of the exam. There is no additional fee for the essay exam.
  • Candidates are allowed ninety (90) minutes for each exam. Please allow a minimum of two hours for check-in, directions and testing.
  • Check a current CLEP study guide for information concerning the breakdown for each test (number of questions, scoring, timing, etc).
  • To have your scores sent to USC (Site #5818), contact CLEP by calling 609-951-1026 and have your scores sent to the Orientation and Testing Office.

CLEP scores belong solely to the candidate. Educational Testing Services (ETS) will send the scores only to the candidate, unless requested to send them elsewhere. The score report will be mailed about two-four weeks after testing. Call CLEP at 1-800-257-9558 if you do not receive your scores within this time frame. Scores can be sent to a college, employer or certifying agency at the time of testing, or transcripts can be sent at a later date since ETS keeps scores on file for 20 years. If you wish to have your score report sent to USC use code #5818.
